Study snapshot
Some people leave the program before the end date. It is important for OnTrackNY teams, families, and participants to know why this happens. This study explores why participants may leave the OnTrackNY program before their expected end date.1
This study asks:
What are the factors associated with leaving the OnTrackNY program, which is typically 2 years long, within the first 12 months after enrollment?
Data comes from team reports on participant background characteristics, medication use, drug or alcohol use, social support systems, and housing. The average age of individuals was 21 years old. Males made up 73% of the sample.
Figure 1: Who participated in this study?
This study was based on data from 1349 diverse OnTrackNY participants enrolled over a five year period (from October 2013 to October 2018).
Study findings
Finding 1. Participants who did not take their medication as prescribed, did not have health insurance, used cannabis, resided alone or with non- parental family, and those with greater ability to perform work and school-related tasks, were at higher risk of leaving OnTrackNY within the first 12 months.
Finding 2. Those with a greater ability to maintain personal relationships were at lower risk of leaving the program earlier than expected.

Final thoughts
This study can help teams and families be more aware of what may influence people to leave the OnTrackNY program. Future studies should seek new ways for participants to remain engaged and complete the OnTrackNY program.
